Hi there! My name is Dayna Corbitt and I am the creator and owner of an online shop called WhimsyCalling, where I sell handmade objects of art. I reside in Olympia, Wa, where I’ve lived for about a month. I moved from Seattle to seek out a less crowded, funkier, more peaceful environment. Also, I quit my job and became a full time artist.
I never thought I could make a living selling art. I was never that confident. I was a terrible student. My teachers probably remember me falling asleep in class, looking dumbfounded when I got called on for questions, and doodling in my notebook at all times. Every subject was pretty much a waste of my time. I had other things to think about. Like would it be better to own a dragon sized dragon or one so small I could keep it in my pocket? Or where would I live if I were a fairy? I had ideas.
Clay is my main medium, but I also took up needle felting, cause I wanted to make dolls with clay faces and soft bodies, but I’m useless with a sewing machine and patterns. Needle felted is like sculpting with wool, so that was a hit. I also started making clay on wood paintings. Somehow the sculpting made my painting better and visa versa. My first show with paintings sold out completely, which thrilled me.
So here I am, an artist by profession. Granted, I only quit my day job just over a month ago. I feel confident that this is the life for me and I can’t imagine going back to work for someone. It feels great to be my own boss, but us creative types can spend a little too much time in Wonderland. How else do you expect us to get our inspiration?!
