19-Year-Old Born Without Fingers Gets Surgery That Places Toes On Her Hand

Rachael Pinwinski is a 19-year-old girl who was born without fully developed fingers on her left hand due to a condition calledamniotic band syndrome.

When she was just 14 years old, doctors told her she’d never be able to have a transplant that would give her a hand full of fingers.

But they were wrong. She discovered a surgery that was worth atry, so she went through with it. And although it’s not guaranteed to work, she’s thinking positively.

During the surgery, doctors took blood vessels, tendons, skin, and even her toeand transplanted them onto her left hand.

They hope she’ll have a second fully functioning hand, but only time will tell. Hopefully, this strong, brave, and beautiful young woman will not reject this hand.

With medical and technological advances, if not this time, Rachael should eventually be ready for afuture with both hands fully functioning.

Thankfully, Rachael’s family is very supportive. If Rachael wereready to get married, and she didn’t have a ring finger to put her ring on, they all promised to switch their own wedding rings to the other hand.

With a family so loving, and with the optimism Rachael seems to have, hopefully her body follows suit.
