When Libby and Matt Sanders posted a photo of Libby’s left hand, the internet went crazy for it. What seemed like an ordinary post-manicure photo turned out to be a testament of the couple’s love.
Libby, a mother of five, had to have her pinky amputated six weeks before the photo was taken in 2016. It was a freak accident. One day she was shutting the screen door when the handle broke off and her finger got caught on a raw edge. She thought it was only a bruise but it was much worse.
“Then it just kept getting worse and worse,” Libby Sanders said. “I ended up having to get it amputated.”
After the amputation, Libby went to paint her fingernails. Instinctively, she went to paint her pinky nail but the finger wasn’t there. She became sad, and that’s when her dear husbandvolunteered his own pinky.
“I will be your surrogate pinky,” said the husband, Matt. “You can paint my pinky to match your nails for the rest of our lives.”
Now whenever Libby gets her nails painted, Matt gets his pinky painted to honor her. The doting husband loves it.
“Every time I see it, it reminds me of my wife. How cool to see a reminder of her every time,” he said.
The viral photo shows Libby’s four fingers pressed on top of Matt’s painted pinky to complete a fully manicured hand. Such a simple image, but it’s rich with symbolism of their caring relationship.
